Trust me on this one: California’s Stephen Cope is one of the best young songwriters you’ve never heard of. I first got to know his songs through the February Album Writing Month challenge — but now you can fall in love with his songs, too, thanks to a collection of songs he recorded just yesterday and has released as a free download.
“The Piano That Would Have Flattened Me Like a Pancake” is just Cope and a grand piano, recorded in an empty church. These are all one-take performances, which makes it both raw and incredibly intimate at the same time. It helps that his songwriting is quirky and literate and that his voice is unique and memorable.
Do yourself a favor, and download this free collection of songs right now (41 MB ZIP file).
